Tarmac Job Complete
The work has now finished and we have tarmac over half the communal area by the club house. Here are some pictures taken on a rather grey day. Hopefully when the weather improves we well get a few better photos and start to enjoy the facility.
Many thanks to GHA for sponsoring the work for us.
Tarmac At the Allotments……
The contractor will be starting work this Wednesday, 20th April.
Can I ask all allotmenteers not to park in the lane as the contractor will need access for their vehicles. The work may last one week.

Butterfly Conservation
I am emailing from the charity Butterfly Conservation to let you know that I will be running some Urban Butterfly Identification workshops in Glasgow in May. We are aiming to get more people recording the butterflies they see in urban greenspaces, including allotments. I had a look at your website, and was very impressed by the likely butterfly-friendly habitats I saw surrounding the plots. Your members would be most welcome to attend any of the workshops (listed below, and see the poster). If anyone would like to attend, they can contact me at amccluskey@butterfly-conservation.org or 01786 459811. The workshops are free to attend, and all are welcome.
Dates:-
- Friday 6th May: Pollok Country Park
- Saturday 7th May: Tollcross Park
- Saturday 14th May: Hogganfield LNR
- Friday 20th May: Robroyston Park LNR
Netting Over Raised Bed
With crops that you have to sow directly like carrots, horticultural fleece will help if the weather turns cold. On my raised beds I use netting above some crops to protect against birds. The netting has a side effect of reducing wind speed and this improves the micro-climate, reducing wind-chill and improving results.
With potatoes you’re better planting in mid-April if the weather dictates than a month earlier. You’ll still get a crop and a better one than you would by planting in frozen ground at the ‘correct’ time.
